E-learning at MMU

The MMU Virtual Learning Environment, or VLE, uses a software system called Blackboard Vista, although it was previously called WebCT Vista. Your lecturers may refer to the system as Vista, WebCT, WebCT Vista, or Blackboard Vista, but they all mean the same thing!

How to log in

Click on the log in link above, then on the next page displayed click on the grey Log In button. You will then be asked to enter your username and password - Type in your MMU network ID/student number in the User Name text box, and enter your network password in the Password text box. If you are a new student, you must ensure that you have logged in to the university network and changed your initial default password BEFORE you try logging into the virtual learning environment.

During this log in process you may get messages in grey pop up windows asking you whether you want to accept a Java certificate, or run Java. Click on 'OK' or 'Run' as necessary in these boxes.

Further help

If you have any problems with the VLE, read our troubleshooting guide. If this doesn't answer your question, you can contact the VLE Help team . Please give us as much detail as you can, including any error messages you may be receiving.

You will find instructions on how to use the various tools in the VLE in our Resources for Students area.

About the VLE

The VLE is a web-based environment which provides a range of tools to support your studies online. These tools allow lecturers to provide access to teaching material and support resources such as reading lists, online articles, audio and video clips etc, support communication and collaboration between students and staff through the use of discussion boards and chat rooms, and enable you to be assessed online, either via multiple choice quizzes or by letting you submit coursework online.

The VLE is based on individual course areas (sometimes called sections), where each course area relates to an individual unit or programme of study. It is used widely across the University and your lecturers will advise you of the ways in which they expect you to utilise the VLE to support your studies as different lecturers will use it in different ways

current user activity level: high

At busy times, ie when the user activity level is high, you may find that the VLE runs a little slower than normal.
